Mahindra announces Automobili Pininfarina; to develop EV hypercar by 2020
The new entity has Michael Perschke as its CEO and Per Svantesson as its COO.
Mahindra and it’s Italian subsidiary Pininfarina S.p.A. has announced a new electric vehicle luxury auto brand under the banner Automobili Pininfarina.
In it’s illustrious 88 year-old history, Pininfarina has designed several iconic automobiles, had manufactured cars for OEMs on contract basis in the past, and more recently, has been involved in turnkey development projects (design, engineering and testing) for new OEMs.
Automobili Pininfarina marks the first time the brand becoming an OEM in its own right, as envisioned by it’s late founder Battista Pininfarina. Based in Europe, the new luxury EV maker will kick start its proceedings in a grand fashion by launching an electric hypercar by 2020.
To be offered in extremely limited numbers, the hypercar will be a collector’s item which, the company hopes, would attract renowned car connoisseurs. Automobili Pininfarina is the latest client for Pininfarina S.p.A. which would design and engineer the hypercar. The recently formed technical partnership with Mahindra Racing Formula E team would help Pininfarina acquire high-performance EV engineering expertise.
The new luxury car brand is headed by Michael Perschke (CEO) who brings in over 25 years of experience in the global luxury car industry. It’s to be noted that Mr. Perschke served as Managing Director of Audi in Africa between 2010 and 2013 and under his leadership, Audi established itself as the country’s best selling premium brand.
There are reports that the first electric hypercar from Automobili Pininfarina would be pitted against the mighty Bugatti Chiron which means, the top speed would enter an uncharted territory of an EV. The brand is also reported to be planning two luxury SUVs at a later stage but there is no official confirmation as of now.
