New SsangYong Rexton (Mahindra XUV700) Africa debut at 2018 Auto Expo
Mahindra is working on a new flagship SUV. This new SUV is internally codenamed as Y400. Launch is expected to take place within 2 years.
At the 2016 Paris Motor Show, Mahindra’s subsidiary SsangYong showcased a new concept called LIV-2 (Limitless Interface Vehicle). This was nothing but the basis of what will be later known as new generation Rexton SUV for the global market, and Mahindra XUV700 for Africa.
Earlier last year the production ready variant of the same SUV made global debut as the new gen SsangYong Rexton. This car will be launched in Africa, as a Mahindra (XUV700) – their new flagship which will sit above the Mahindra XUV500 and will rival the likes of Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner. It will debut at the 2018 Auto Expo next month.
How big is Mahindra XUV700 (Y400)
This new Mahindra flagship SUV will sit above the XUV500 in the company line-up and could be christened as the XUV700 upon launch (which is expected to take place within 2 years). A full-size premium SUV with 3 rows and seating for 7, will be positioned in such a way that it rivals the likes of Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. In fact, the report adds that the new Mahindra XUV700 will undercut the two rivals by about 4-5 lakhs.
Based on the LIV-2 (XUV700) concept, the XUV700 will measure is 4.85 m long, 1.92 m wide, and 1.8 m tall. It has a wheelbase of 2865 mm, which is 120 mm more than that of Fortuner, thereby resulting in more interior space. The flagship Mahindra will not only beat rivals in terms of space, but also in terms of features.
For example, the LIV-2 concept is considered, it gets features like – individual seats, and a fully connected centre console for rear seat occupants. Seats recline, and feature massage function. An integrated communication system features a central 9.2″ monitor and 10.1″ monitor in each headrest. Connectivity is boosted through Wi-Fi, Apple AvtoPlay and Android Auto. The car illuminates the path for passengers approaching or leaving the car at night. Luxury is a high priority for a chauffeur driven limousine experience.
On safety front, the concept is loaded with features like nine airbags (front, front & rear side, curtain and driver’s knee), advanced emergency braking system (AEBS), lane departure warning, blind spot detection, lane change assist, traffic safety assist and high beam assistance, safety is a focus area.
Speaking about engine options, the new SsangYong Y400 gets power from the 181 PS 2.2-litre Euro 6 diesel engine with peak torque of 420 Nm (309 lb-ft) between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. A 7-speed Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission is mated to the newly developed 2.0-liter GDi turbocharged petrol engine that returns 225 PS and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.
On the design front, SsangYong LIV-2 concept upholds the automaker’s design philosophy, Nature-born 3Motion. Up front, LIV-2 grille and headlights seamlessly come together. Coherent, and bold, the matte white body and white-ish interior insist on futuristic notions. White, specific, and in place. The car rides on an advanced Quad-Frame platform which is built using 63 percent high-strength steel and 1.5 Gpa giga-steel. This results in high structural strength and low body weight.
