Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto fares to be slashed – Here’s why
GST on food and drink served on trains and at stations reduced from 18% to 5%.
With effect from April 16, 2018, IRCTC has significantly reduced food prices. This will make travelling by Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto Express-type trains cheaper as catering prices are inbuilt into the ticket fare for these trains.
The reduction on price of meals comes after the Finance Ministry issued a clarification that GST – Goods and Services Tax rates, applicable on food and drinks served to train passengers and on platforms will be uniform at 5% as against an earlier tax rate of 18%.
The announcement resulted in an immediate effect on Mail and Express trains where food is offered on a post paid basis. However on trains such as the Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto Express, the price of meals is inclusive in the ticket cost and hence comes into effect for advance reservations from April 16, 2018.
For these premium trains, the revised food and drink rates are at INR 90 for breakfast in 1st AC and Executive chair cars, INR 70 in 2nd AC, 3 tier AC and Chair car and at INR 40 in sleeper class.
Evening tea where dinner is served will now cost INR 45 in 1st AC and Executive chair car. In 2nd AC and 3 tier AC and chair car evening tea will cost INR 45 while on the Duronto sleeper it will cost INR 20.
Lunch and dinner prices will vary from INR 75-140 as per type of train or coach while combo meals will be priced at INR 70 on all trains.
