Tata’s new Land Rover based SUV spied ahead of 2018 Auto Expo?
Tata Q501 and Q502 premium SUVs will borrow certain structural components from Land Rover Discovery Sport.
Tata Motors is working on a new flagship SUVs to increase their market share in the UV segment. Codenamed Tata Q501 and Q502, the upcoming premium SUVs will be offered in 5 and 7 seat options. It will make global debut at the 2018 Auto Expo.
Earlier today, Rushlane reader, Shahin managed to click photos of a test mule which was on test on Nice Road in Bangalore. Wearing a KA01 TC plate, the first impression was that this was a Toyota vehicle. But the overall design looked more like a Range Rover. Why a KA no plate? It could be being tested by Harman or Bosch? The same test mule was also spotted by reader Siddiqui inside the city.
Tata Q501 is the more affordable of the two, and is expected to be launched in the Rs 13 lakh segment. It will rival the new Jeep Compass, which has been a runaway success in Africa, thanks to its premium features, solid built and attractive pricing. The new Tata SUV will also feature similar qualities. It will be underpinned by the old generation Land ROver Discovery Sport platform and will be priced lower than Jeep Compass.
Tata Q502 will be a 7 seater variant, and will rival the likes of Mahindra XUV500. Despite sharing platform components with a Land Rover, the upcoming Tata premium SUVs are said to have a completely different appeal, appearance and feel. To keep the costs at bay, Tata Motors has refrained from using the tech-laden JLR Ingenium family of engines.
Instead, the automaker is going to use the 2.0-litre Fiat MultiJet II diesel engine. This is the same engine which we have already seen on the newly launched Jeep Compass. The same engine will power the new Tata SUV. The five seater will get a engine which will be tuned to deliver 140 PS while the 7 seater will get the same specs as seen on Jeep Compass, which is 170 PS.
Keeping up with their premium positioning, the Tata Q501 would be packed with several safety features, driver assistance systems and latest connectivity features. The SUV will be the most feature-rich and advanced car from Tata till date.
The flagship duo were previously expected to be ready sometime in 2017. But that has changed now, and the project is set to enter production in 2019. Get ready to see the first concept at the 2018 Auto Expo next month.
