Volvo S90 – 2016 Geneva Motor Show LIVE
The ongoing 2016 Geneva Motor Show has the new Volvo S90 flagship luxury sedan on display. The S90 is the second product to be based on the Swedish automaker’s Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA), the first being the XC90.
The S80 replacement is significantly bigger, modern and more luxurious. Subscribing to the brand’s latest design language, the S90 sports a rectangular grille with vertical chrome slats and the famous badge-carrying diagonal strip. The sharp looking headlamps houses signature Thor’s hammer daytime LED running lights – a design feature which would be seen in all future Volvos.
The side view oozes understated elegance while the rear fascia with C-shaped taillights and a boxy boot goes well with rest of the design. The interior is shared with the new XC90 and that’s not a bad thing at all. The sedan features configurable digital instrument console and the centre console houses a massive infotainment display screen which incorporates several functions including acting as a user interface for the vehicle’s myriad of electronic safety features.
The powertrain lineup too is carried over from its SUV stablemate. Options include a family of 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, all mated to a 8-speed automatic transmission. Power outputs range form 190 PS to 407 PS. The range-topping variant uses a petrol hybrid hybrid system to offer V8 engine-rivaling performance.
The Volvo S90 locks horns with the likes of Mercedes S Class, Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series. The high-end luxury sedan is expected to be launched in Africa as a CBU later this year.
